GRAND HAVEN -- It is nearing its 50-year anniversary, but those who attend the Grand Haven Musical Fountain's nightly shows in the summer are continually flabbergasted.

We developed an intelligent musical fountain authoring system, which reduces programming costs. Download Article. There have been several attempts to write software to automate a musical fountain's response to a piece of music. We then access the stored mesh data from Maya ( www.autodesk.com/maya).

Built in 1962 and funded entirely by private donations, the fountain showcases a synchronized and colorful display of shooting water, along with musical accompaniment.

Just ask Christina Smith, who attended her first show in the 1980s and continues to bring her 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son to the summer evening spectacle at Dewey Hill. 'It never gets old,' the Norton Shores resident said. 'It's such a beautiful sight and I

wanted to make sure they saw it, too.'

However, many people may not realize a much newer feature that has been added to the aging fountain, said Roger Jonas, a fountain committee member.

A website allowing visitors to create their own musical choreography has resulted in the addition of 200 songs to the fountain's library.

Reception to the program was high when the online element first was introduced in 2006, with a teenager from Hong Kong programming at least 40 songs, Jonas said. Another choreographer from Detroit was a regular contributor to the fountain's website.

The attraction still receives anywhere from 10 to 20 songs per year, but Jonas hopes to spread awareness of the program to more community members.

'It takes a little fiddling with and some getting used to,' he said. 'It's something that anyone can do.'

The program offers a simulation of how water will act during a live show. Once completed, it can be submitted to the fountain's committee and if approved, will be added to the music library.

Those interested in using the program shouldn't fret over the genre of song they choose, Jonas said.

'If it can be played locally on the radio, it will work,' he said. '(The fountain) appeals to a wide range of audiences. It's a combination show.'

ABILITY

Rather than designing choreography, visitors to the website can also simply request songs to be played.

Most people involved with submitting the choreographed songs to the committees seem to have been younger, Jonas said.

Craig Mahoney, 19, of Grand Haven, said he might give it a try.

'It's kind of cool seeing how they program the fountain to go along with the music,' he said. 'It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to do myself.'

The event runs nightly until Sept. 6. After that, shows only run on weekends until Sept. 25. Starting times are scheduled according to whenever nightfall begins.
