How To Install Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines Mods On Steam

Sep 14, 2011  Download the newest non-beta patch. 7.6b does not matter. Newer patches come with a widescreen patch that may make the hex edit obsolete. This 'respatch' sometimes patches in. On problems with Steam run Steam and game as administrator, then the unpatched game once, switch to offline mode, disable steam community and automatic update before installing to steamapps common vampire - the masquerade bloodlines.

This is a brief guide with the latest, up-to-date instructions on how to install Clan Quest Mod, version 4.0 and later. For earlier versions of the mod, please refer to the documentation that was packaged with the mod. It’s important that you follow this guide or else the game may become buggy and unstable. A few other notes:

  • There is no way to get old saved games to work with the new mod installation. You will have to start a new game after installing the mod.
  • Only install other mods for Vampire using the Clan Quest Mod installer. Mods for Vampire are generally not cross-compatible so installing one mod on over another will most likely result in problems while playing the game. The CQM installer resolves these differences so there is no risk in installing mods using the installer.
  • CQM 4.0 requires that you launch the game using the shortcut it will create on your desktop. Failing to do so will still run the game, but without the CQM mod.

60 Second Version

If you’ve ever installed any Bloodlines mods in the past, you first need to reinstall Vampire, making sure to delete any files left over by the previously installed mods. Download and run the CQM installer. This will do it’s very best to find your Vampire directory and install the mod there. It will also give you a menu to decide which additional mods you want to install along with CQM. The installer will create a mod directory that contains all the files for CQM. It will also create a shortcut on your desktop with which to launch the game, specifying CQM as the mod you want to run when you play. You must either use this shortcut to launch the game or create your own shortcut, but you have to tell Vampire to run the game with CQM.

1) Determine Install Path

When you install “Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines” it copies the game files to your computer, usually somewhere under the C:Program Files directory, but it varies on your individual installation and whether you play the game on Good Old Games, Steam or you’re using the original CDs. To install CQM, you need to know the location of this directory. The mod installer will do it’s best to figure this out for you automatically, but it’s helpful if you know. All future instructions in this guide will refer to this directory as your “Vampire directory”. Below is list of typical directories the game is installed to, although yours may differ.

Default Windows XPVista 32 bit installation directory:

C:Program FilesActivisionVampire the Masquerade – Bloodlines

Default Vista 64 bit Windows 7 Windows 10 installation directory:

C:Program Files (x86)ActivisionVampire the Masquerade – Bloodlines

Default Steam installation directory:

C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonvampire the masquerade – bloodlines

2) Install a Fresh Version of Bloodlines [Optional]

This is only really necessary if you’ve installed other mods in the past and even then may not be totally necessary, so you can probably skip this step unless you run into problems installing the mod / running the game. You’ll want to first uninstall Bloodlines from your computer. You can do this by:

Retail:

  • Insert the CD and select “Uninstall”.
  • When prompted, delete all local content.

Steam:

  • Open Steam, goto the “My Games” tab. Right click on VTMB and select “Delete local content”. The game will move to the “Not installed” area.

VTMB’s uninstaller only removes files that were installed by VTMB. If you have installed other mods or patches, those files are not cleaned up and may present issues; you’ll want to delete those files. Delete the Vampire directory, as per step 1.

Next, you need to install the game. You can do that via the following:

Retail:

  • Insert CD 1 and select “Install”. Follow the instructions.

Steam:

  • Start Steam.
  • Click on “My Games”.
  • Right click the VTMB game within the Steam window and select “Install Game”.

If you run into problems re-installing: “Your Steam Ticket has expired” delete the file “ClientRegistry.blob” from C:Program FilesSteam. This will force steam to update when it next starts which should fix the problem.

Sometimes Steam does not fully extract the contents of your game until you actually launch the game. To be certain steam does not clobber any of the mod changes, you should launch a newly installed Steam version of the game at least once before running the CQM installer.

3) Clean Up Old CQM Files

This step is only necessary if you skipped step 2, above. It’s also unnecessary if you’ve never installed a previous version of Clan Quest Mod. If you installed a previous version of Clan Quest Mod, you will need to cleanup those files before installing the newer version of the mod. You can easily do this by navigating to your Vampire directory and looking for a folder called “CQM”. Delete that folder. Note that this will also delete any: saved games, screenshots and user configurations you had setup when you were playing the game previously with CQM.

4) Run the “VtMB – Clan Quest Mod Installer” file.

This self-executing installer will ask you a few basic questions. During the installation process, you’ll make several choices to help with the install process, but it should be largely self-explanatory.

It will first ask you which directory to install Clan Quest Mod. It will try to detect this for you automatically, but you may need to specify it manually. Make sure you specify the correct directory as per step 1. This is very important, and is the step people get wrong more often than anything else.

Next the installer will ask you which additional mods and options you’d like to enable. It’s perfectly fine to leave the default/recommended selections and click next, but you may want to further customize your “Bloodlines” experience. Refer to the Integrated Mods page if you’d like more information about the options on this screen.

After selecting that, click “Next” one more time, and the installer should copy the mod files to your computer.

5) Install Latest Patch

Occasionally there’s fixes that need to be made to the mod after it’s released, or there’s new additions, fixes or improvements that have been made to the game. These are distributed as patches. Whenever you’re installing Clan Quest Mod, you should also install the latest patch that accompanies that version of the mod. The patch version is based on the release version of the mod, so for example patch 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 go with version 3.1.0 of the mod and patch 4.0.1 goes with version 4.0. You can always download the latest patch at moddb.com . You only ever to need to install the most recent patch for whatever version of the mod you’re using.

As of the time of this writing there are no patches for the latest version of the mod, version 4.1.

6) Find the Desktop Shortcut and Run the Game

You should be done now! Check your desktop for a new icon and use it to launch the game. The best way to verify that the mod has been installed and launched correctly is via the game’s main menu screen. The main header should be replaced with a graphic that reads ‘Clan Quest Mod’, and includes a graphic of all the clan symbols. If you see that, then you have successfully installed Clan Quest Mod! Enjoy!

Note: You MUST launch the game using the shortcut. Using the short cut makes certain that the option to use CQM is enabled when you launch the game. If you don’t use the shortcut then the game will run, but without the CQM content.

There is one caveat to the above disclaimer. You can set the game to run from Steam using the mod, without using the shortcut. To do so, find Vampire in your game library and right-click it. Select ‘Properties’ from the context-menu. This will open a new window. From there, click the button under the ‘General’ tab labeled ‘Set Launch Options…’. In the text box type the following:

Now when you launch the game from steam, it will use the Clan Quest mod.

7) Install 64-Bit Patch [Optional]

Bloodlines has difficulties running on 64-bit systems. When you launch the game you may get an error message that reads something to the effect of “Available Memory less than 15MB”. If this happens, follow the instruction in this guide to help get the game running. The mod should install a folder called “Extras” in your Vampire directory which contains a patch named INSTALL64, which should fix this. You can of course skip these instructions if you have no problem launching the game.

8) Read the Documentation [Optional]

The installer puts two additional folders in your Vampire directory, “Extras” and “Documentation”. They both contain some interesting files related to the game that you can peruse if you’re interested.
